RPG – Successful Demonstration 2

In a Successful Demonstration post, I add a few more pieces of ICE to my Unofficial Android RPG system. Specifically, for use with the Expanded Rules for Net Intrusion module.

To start us off, I grabbed what I thought were the most iconic pieces of ICE for each faction (including neutral) from the Spin cycle. As I complete Successful Demonstrations, they’ll either be the same (moving onto Lunar cycle and so on), or they’ll be themed ones—like Grail or NEXT.

Successful Demonstration 2

RPG – Hook 4

I feel like a smuggling job. Do you feel like a smuggling job?

This hook is probably best for a group themed around

  • Criminals
  • Freedom Fighters
  • Spies

The cargo containers that you took possession of on Luna were suspiciously neat and tidy. In a place like the docklands, you expect something to have a few dings or scrapes on it. But these ones were shiny as a chrome button on an executive’s nicest suit.

Your job? Secure portage from Heinlein to Challenger, descend the Beanstalk, and deliver your cargo to the buyer in Rabotgorod.

Just don’t get noticed by the Yellowjackets or the NAPD.

Some thoughts on where to go with this

  • Cargo is filled with stolen bioroid components
  • Martian extremists will detonate the cargo at Midway
  • A powerful psychic clone is being returned to Jinteki
  • Advanced weaponry skimmed from the military to be sold on the street

RPG – Successful Demonstration 1

In a Successful Demonstration post, I add a few more pieces of ICE to my Unofficial Android RPG system. Specifically for use with the Expanded Rules for Net Intrusion module.

To start us off, I grabbed what I thought were the most iconic pieces of ICE for each faction (including neutral) from the Genesis cycle. As I complete Successful Demonstrations, they’ll either be the same (moving onto Spin cycle and so on), or they’ll be themed ones—like Grail or NEXT.

Name Manufacturer Rez Subtypes Str Subroutines
Eli 1.0 Haas-Bioroid 3 Barrier, Bioroid 4 The Runner can spend one maneuver to break any subroutine on Eli 1.0.

  • End the run.
  • End the run.
Caduceus Weyland 3 Sentry, Tracer 3
  • Trace3 – If successful, flip one Destiny point to dark, if able.
  • Trace2 – If successful, end the run.
Dracō Open Source 1 Sentry, Tracer 0 When the Sysop rezzes Dracō, he or she may spend advantages and additional successes to place X power counters on Dracō.

Dracō has +1 strength for each power counter on it.

  • Trace2 – If successful, give the Runner 1 tag and end the run.
Pop-up Window NBN 0 Code Gate, Advertisement 0 When the Runner encounters Pop-up Window, flip one Destiny point to dark, if able.

  • End the run unless the Runner spends 10 credits.
Whirlpool Jinteki 0 Trap 1
  • The Runner cannot jack out for the remainder of this run. Trash Whirlpool.

RPG – Hook 2

On Tuesday we start our journey through Station One cards, so let’s have an adventure to celebrate it.

This hook is probably best for a group themed around

  • Runner Collectives
  • Criminals
  • Spies
  • Freedom Fighters

Conversely, with a little modification, you could be MCA operatives or private security hired to protect the mark.

Word came down that one of your inner circle was a mole for the MCA. And that simply won’t do. Your source couldn’t identify the traitor, but there was no mistake: someone had turned over compromising files from your operation without clearing the identifying markers.

Once the MCA ran your info through their servers, those identifying markers were picked up by an allied cell, and they’d relayed the bad news.

Now you’ve got a half dozen of your closest informants, fences, thugs, and lowlifes at the Mother Molloy’s Irish Pub on sixth level, and you need to find the traitor before he or she can leak any more data to the law.

Some thoughts on where to go with this

  • Murder-mystery style social encounters
  • Burn it all down
  • Maybe the allies aren’t allies after all
  • The MCA crashes the meet

One additional note: Mother Molloy’s is an Irish-style pub and restaurant chain completely staffed by clones. See The Worlds of Android pages 66 and 67.

RPG – Hook 1

Android is a Cybernoir setting, so the obvious first hook is a murder.

We’re also entrenched in Mars right now, so let’s make it a Martian Murder!

This hook is probably best for a group themed around

  • Police
  • Investigators
  • Private Security

For days, Khondi Plaza has been clogged with demonstrations and protesters. The only reason it hasn’t devolved into a full-on riot yet is the heavy presence of MCA security forces. Still, there is crime and violence. Agitators who step too far out of line are subdued without mercy, and opportunists flit through the masses stealing anything small enough to grab.

The situation wasn’t helped when the Earth delegation arrived, their transport forcing its way through the crowds using threats of violence. To the gathered Martians, the Earth diplomats personified gratuitous wealth and the exploitation of the underclass. Having more Earth perspectives cluttering up Martian politics was unconscionable.

There was no major incident as the visitors reached the Khondi Tower. It was the next day that everything hit the fan.

Khalid Duvorek, a New Angeles resident and ambassador to Mars had been murdered in his rooms. Pro-clan propaganda was graffitied throughout the murder scene, suggesting a Martian extremist group was responsible, but is that the whole story?

Some thoughts on where to go with this

  • Clans framing Clans
  • Corporate buy-off gone wrong
  • In-flight personal entanglements gone bad
  • Professional hit
  • Ratcheting tension between MCA and Clans

Expanded Rules for Net Intrusion

The response for the last RPG post was pretty exciting. The writers and artists and designers at FFG have built such a rich world that it’s no wonder a whole lot of us want to engage with it in varied ways.

But one thing that the Edge of the Empire RPG is missing (to give it that real Netrunner-edged feel) is some advanced rules for dropping ICE and making runs.

This document is an optional addition to my Unofficial Android RPG. With the stuff it contains, you can really explore the type of Runner (or Sysop) you want to be, and you can build your rig and customize your console.

This replaces the Runner Specialization in the original document with a whole new Runner Career. This new career includes four specializations. The rules also cover ICE, runs, servers, and equipment.

Hope you enjoy! This is where a lot of my own design came into play, and I haven’t had the opportunity to test this extensively. I expect this is where we’ll get the most amount of change and updates as people start to poke around the rules. I welcome any and all feedback.

Expanded Rules for Net Intrusion

Unofficial Android RPG

Sorry folks! No follow up post this week. By the time this post goes live it won’t be a surprise, but I’m on vacation for my birthday! No chance to play Netrunner at the store this week. Next week! So, without further ado…

Do you like roleplaying games?

I do.

Do you know what needs an RPG?

The Android Universe.

I also really love the Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG system. They’ve done a really good job, and you know what Star Wars has in common with Android? Everything but the spaceships and the aliens. Well, and the Force. Don’t worry about it.

It’s honestly criminal that FFG hasn’t printed us an RPG to adventure in the Android Universe. I’m sure they’re working on it, but I’m impatient. So, with the help of Edge of the Empire and Worlds of Android, I hodge podged together this unofficial, completely unsanctioned, free-of-cost RPG hack.

All disclaimers and stuff, I just made this for fun. I did my best to avoid copying rules or proprietary text, simply referencing the Edge of the Empire books when it comes to things like Talents or how to actually play the game.

Hope you enjoy it!

So what does this mean for my blog?

Well, every Monday I’ll be doing an RPG-related post. I’m starting with this one with the rules. Next week I’ll post my Expanded Rules for Net Intrusion (more Netrunner-y hacking rules). After that it’s probably just a quick adventure seed. Maybe some more gear, options, or musings on the system. I’ll also occasionally update the rules if I get any feedback.

And now, the file!
